HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!
Time really flies when you’re having fun! This month marks our 5th
Anniversary of business here at Conway Aviation Services. Thanks so
much for your support and your business over the past few years. We
hope we’re having this much fun when we roll thru the 50th
Anniversary!!
TFR =Temporary Flight Restrictions
Most of you are familiar with the TFR that surrounds the Pine
Bluff Arsenal. It’s a flight restriction that says that you may not
fly over the Arsenal lower than 3,000 ft. MSL within a 3 mile radius
of the Arsenal.
Since 9/11, many TFR locations have
popped up all over the country. The location of these TFR’s may be
found thru sites on the internet, thru Flight Service Stations and
thru most weather reporting sites as well as thru the FAA’s website.
What you may NOT know is that TFR’s can pop up overnight.
The political season that we are in today
has made this restriction even more prevalent. The best example I can
think of as to why we all need to be aware of TFR’s is this. Let’s say
that you own a Champ or a Cessna 150 or for that matter any aircraft.
You come out to the airport one morning to exercise your airplane and
plan on flying locally to see the sights.
Perhaps you think you’ll fly over the
Arkansas River to see how the duck club is doing or you’ll fly up to
Petit Jean Mountain to eat at the lodge. Well what you didn’t realize
was that President Bush or Senator Kerry has decided to honor our
state with a visit to Little Rock that morning. Along with the visit
comes a TFR that states that ANY/ALL aircraft flying within a 30nm
radius of the LIT VOR must be on an IFR flight plan prior to
departure.
What more than likely will happen is that
as you depart Conway, you’ll be identified by radar as not having a
valid IFR flight plan and within seconds, you’ll probably see a member
of the U.S. Air Force off of your wing telling you to land
immediately!!!
This is of course a worse case scenario
but it happens virtually everyday!!
Before you take off for any flight, be
sure and check the local Notams as well as the D Notams available thru
any FSS. Another easy way to determine if there is a TFR in place in
the LIT area is to call the LIT ATIS phone # prior to your departure.
That number is 501-324-2618.
Be aware of your airspace at all times,
even if it’s your local airspace.
