HAPPY NEW YEAR!
PUBLIC HEARING
As
some of you are aware, a public hearing was held concerning the
proposed relocation of the airport on December 4th. |

Everyone who attended the
“public hearing” was very disappointed. To avoid possible hostilities and
conflicts, the meeting was set up so that interested parties were forced
to place their comments in written form or on a tape recording!
I’m not even sure if
this constituted a legal public hearing. Everyone I spoke to was very
disappointed and left almost immediately once they found out that their
opinions would not be heard by our council members in a public forum. “I
guess our opinion really doesn’t matter, I suppose the council is going to
do what ever they want to do” was the comment I heard from one aircraft
owner.
HEARING CONVERSATION
I spoke for quite some
time at the “gathering” to Aubrey Adcock who is with the engineering firm
responsible for the airport relocation study. A couple of jewels that came
out of the conversation were that the FAA will not be funding any new ILS
installations. Our foggy runway will have to depend on GPS approaches
only. How low on the approach you will be able to go is an unknown factor
at this time. Another conversation was with Bill Bell, the FAA
representative for our region who said that there was no funding available
for any airport relocation project for several years. As far
as a timetable for any relocation he pointed to the Benton Arkansas project
which has been going on now for 3 years with a projected completion
of 2007. (Seven years from start to finish.)
Mr.
Frank Robins
Our hats
go off to Mr. Robins. Mr. Robins has been a fixture in Conway and at
Cantrell Field for many, many years. Mr. Robins made his solo flight in
1976 and has been a very active pilot and aircraft owner since then. Mr.
Frank has recently sold his pride and joy Bonanza and has many pilot
accessories that he would like to sell. Please give Mr. Robins a call at
329-2866 if you are interested in purchasing any of his pristine pilot
accessories.
AIRPORT DESIGNATION
A recent
letter from the FAA informed me that the identifier for Cantrell Field will
change from M03 to CWS in late February. The explanation given was that the
identifier conflicted with an airport in Missouri. No mention if the
designator for our NDB would change. Stand by on this one; I’m sure there
will be a NOTAM posted soon with further information.
