DENNIS F. CANTRELL
~ Jan 22, 1908 / Aug 1 2002 ~
Dennis F. Cantrell, namesake of Cantrell
Field, was born just 5 years after Wilber & Orville made their first Kitty
Hawk flight. He started the Conway Municipal Airport in 1939, when he was
just 31 and the airfield was little more than a single grass airstrip.

For
nearly half a century, until his retirement at the vivacious age of 78 in
1986, Mr. Cantrell worked at the airport every day, ultimately cultivating
the development of two modern lighted blacktop runways, a well-equipped
airport facility, and the heartfelt admiration of his fellow
aviators.
Beyond retirement and past the turn of a new century, Mr. Cantrell's deep
affection for all things aeronautic remained a driving force of his life.
Continuing to pilot the prides of his fleet, a 1957 Cessna 180 and a 1929
Beech Travel Air bi-plane, Mr. Cantrell also tended his own hangar duties on
a daily basis into his early-90s.
Over the course of his aviation career, Mr. Cantrell's reputation as an
advocate for bettering the Arkansas aviation community grew to be legendary
and, considering his tremendous contribution to the overall well-being of
General Aviation and the Conway community specifically, this honorable
praise is rightly deserved. |
